The sweet spot: November to February

Mornings at 12–16 °C and clear skies make the long stair comfortable, which is why crowds peak in December and January. Book rooms early for those weeks. If you can choose, aim for weekdays in late November or February.

The shoulder months: October and March

October is still shaking off the monsoon and can be humid, but crowds are thinner. March warms quickly; plan to finish the hardest steps before the sun is high.

Hot months: April and May

With highs close to 40 °C the stairway has little shade. If you must go, start well before dawn, carry more water than you think you need, and consider the ropeway for the first 5,000 steps.

Monsoon: June to September

July is typically the wettest month, with rain on most days from August to September. Steps become slippery, mist hides the view, and heavy bursts have caused flooding around Junagadh in recent years. The greenery is spectacular, but most pilgrims wait for the post-monsoon weeks.

Festival weeks

The Lili Parikrama in November and the Bhavnath Mela around Maha Shivratri bring tens of thousands of extra visitors. Expect long ropeway queues, full rooms and heavier traffic.

Packing by season

  • Winter: a light jacket or shawl for the pre-dawn start and the windy top.
  • Summer: cap, sunscreen, extra water and electrolytes.
  • Monsoon: grippy shoes and a rain layer.
